LoRaWAN, LoRaWAN, LoRaWAN…it’s all you will hear our IoT team at Quext talk about right now, and not for bad reasons. LoRaWAN has unlocked a brand new experience for companies like ourselves to build incredibly innovative technology for people in apartments. Let’s start with a bit of background knowledge.
What in the world is LoRaWAN?
According to the LoRaWAN Alliance, LoRaWAN is a low power, wide area networking protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery operated ‘things’ to the internet in regional, national, or global networks, and targets key Internet of Things (IoT) requirements such as bi-directional communication, end-to-end security, mobility, and localization services.

LoRaWAN Smart Building Solutions at Quext
Now we have covered exactly what LoRaWAN is and how it works so let’s talk about some real world applications when it comes to IoT smart building solutions. Obviously we at Quext are utilizing this technology in our IoT smart home automation solution. When a LoRaWAN community hub is installed on an apartment property, it communicates with our custom built smart hub thermostat installed in every apartment unit. It’s super-efficient, covers a wide area and uses much less hardware in and out of apartment units.
The whole idea around bringing an alternative solution to smart home and building automation is to introduce a new normal into how IoT solutions can be set up in various home settings. For one, we have apartments. Apartments generally are filtered into some kind of garden style, high-rise or mid-rise…etc. These types of buildings similarly resemble other types of living situations like:
-Student Housing
-Retirement Homes
-Townhomes
-Government Housing
-Build-to-Rent
With these similar structures, operating a smart home automation solution using LoRaWAN can be incredibly beneficial over a traditional solution using WiFi. Building new and fitting existing home communities into smart communities is the best way to continue to create a technological world in homes, and LoRaWAN will be the connection point to use it.
